Asia is the world's largest and most populous continent, located primarily in the eastern and northern hemispheres. It covers 8.6% of the Earth's total surface area (or 29.9% of its land area) and with approximately 4 billion people, it hosts 60% of the world's current human population. During the 20th century Asia's population nearly quadrupled.

Asia is traditionally defined as part of the landmass of Eurasia — with the western portion of the latter occupied by Europe — located to the east of the Suez Canal, east of the Ural Mountains and south of the Caucasus Mountains (or the Kuma-Manych Depression) and the Caspian and Black Seas. It is bounded on the east by the Pacific Ocean, on the south by the Indian Ocean and on the north by the Arctic Ocean. Given its size and diversity, Asia — a toponym dating back to classical antiquity — is more a cultural concept incorporating a number of regions and peoples than a homogeneous physical entity (see Subregions of Asia, Asian people). Furthermore, the rather arbitrary separation between Asia and Europe reveals the euro-centric and racially based nature of the concept of continents; where Europe is inhabited only by caucasians and Asia inhabited by a heterogenous group of 'others'.

The wealth of Asia differs very widely among and within its regions, due to its vast size and huge range of different cultures, environments, historical ties and government systems. In terms of nominal GDP, Japan has the largest economy on the continent and the second largest in the world. In purchasing power parity terms, however, China has the largest economy in Asia and the second largest in the world.

Why is Europe considered a separate continent while India is considered part of Asia?
Q. Europe and Asia have been together for much longer than India and Asia and the boundary between Europe and Asia is less substantial than the boundary between India and Asia. KT Dyke: did you just make that up or do you have some support for your statement?

A. The accepted boundaries of Europe and Asia came about for cultural reasons, not essentially geographic. It began with the ancient Greeks who recognised a boundary between their cultures and others in Asia Minor. As the geography of the region became more understood, the arbitrary division of Europe and Asia extended along cultural lines, between societies viewed as 'Asian' or 'European'. Some of the boundaries follow geographic features such as mountain ranges and lakes, but that's because it also it marked tribal boundaries. The accepted boundaries were established before the advent of modern geology and the understanding of plate tectonics.

A. We were already here in the western hemisphere before the "out of Africa" diaspora was supposed to have happened. Archeologists have found proof of our living on these shores for more than 50,000 yrs. India is a country in Asia and the citizens are called Indians. They are not our people though, nor are they our relatives. The white people called us Indians, we tend to identify ourselves by our tribal identities. Although, we have had the name NDN for so long, that many of us still use it, and accept it. I use it and accept it, just like my parents and grand parents did. I'm NDN, North hill Yokuts, and Southern Miwok, and my ancestors have been here since long before the last ice age.
